Tosei! Have you heard this before? Okay, it's a popular indian food usually eaten by indians. It originated from, of course India, specifically from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Telangana. How is tosei made? It is made by a mixture of rice and urad dhal ( ulundhu) that has been soaked in water is ground finely to form a batter. the batter is allowed to ferment overnight. Then it is mixed with some water to get the required or desired thickness. Then it spread out evenly with the base of ladle or a bowl to form a pancake-like structure. (wikipedia)
There are so many types of tosei, which are :
- Rava tosei
- Tomato tosei
- Egg tosei
- Paper tosei
- Masala tosei
- vegetable tosei
- steamed tosei
- onion tosei
The most famous tosei will be the masala tosei. How it is? Well the tosei is stuffed with a lightly cooked filling of potatoes, fried onions and spices. Then, the tosei is wrapped around an onion or potato curry or masala and if you guys would like to know, masala tosei has been listed as number 49 on World's most Delicious Foods compiled by CNN Go in 2011. Tosei goes perfectly with fillings of vegetables and sauces to make it simple. Common side items that a tosei needs will be, sambar,coconut chutneys ( a semisolid paste) or tomato chutney, dry chutney ( podi or molagapodi) a powder like spices and even Indian pickles. Sometimes it is also best to eat with chicken or mutton curry and dhal curry is an optional for some people. For kids, sometimes they dont prefer spice so it can be served with ghee and sugar.
It is always best to drink some herbal drinks or black tea when you are eating tosei. Tosei is also served in some corporate events,parties and special occasions like weddings, dinners and so on.
