FRUIT SALAD ( ROJAK BUAH )

Fruit salad. Yes it's a common dish in every countries but in Malaysia, the way they do it is different. In western countries they will mix the fruits with mayonnaise and some other ingredients but here we mix it in a different and unique way.

In countries like Malaysia and Singapore, the term 'rojak' is used as colloquial expression for an electric mix, in particular the word describes the multi-ethnic character of a Malaysian and Singaporean society. In Indonesia, the Javanese, rojak is essential part of the traditional prenatal ceremony. There this fruit salad is served to the mother-to-be and her guests especially her female friends.

This fruit salad or rojak buah is made by shredding instead of thinly slicing the fruits. Pomelo is an essential fruit for this salad when it is given to the mother-to-be where it is believed that i the overall rojak tastes sweet, the unborn would be girl and if it is spicy it would be boy.

In Malaysia, the fruit salad consist of cucumber, pineaapple, jicama, bean sprouts, taupok which are the puffy, deep-fried tofu. Raw mangoes and green apples are less commonly used. Then these fruits are mixed with belacan (shrimp paste), water, sugar, chilli and lime juice. Later, the mixture is then topped with chopped peanuts and dash of ground pink ginger bud.

There are so many different types of rojak (salad), but mostly found in Indonesia such as :

- rojak tumbuk

- rojak serut

- rojak pengantin

- rojak cingur

- rojak petis

- rojak juhi

- rojak soto
